This is a soon to be world traveling film installation in collaboration with StudioTooGood, Four diverse multi-sensory tents that you can walk through and explore will house each individual film. I was tasked with coming up with the creative and directing the four 2 minute films that will be projected full bleed into the back of each tent. The overall theme was ‘alchemy’, a visual interpretation of how whisky is made, everything was created in-camera and the four films will be released later this year.

A booklet accompanies the installation featuring a series of images I shot during the filming and post production

Me and Sarah Parker contributed to this Summer’s issue of Its Nice That’s new quarterly magazine Printed Pages. A concept I have been working on for awhile now that’s based around the physical representations of Synesthesia. We worked with the UK Synesthesia Association’s members to create a true representation of multiple synesthete’s personal experiences with numbers.

Synesthesia is a neurological condition in which stimulation of one sensory pathway leads to an involuntary experience through taste, touch, sound and scent. For instance Rebekah Paulovich-Boucly experiences the first image of the number ’3′ as a personality, texture and distinct colours. The blue ink is a representation of what James Wannerton experiences when he see’s or thinks of the number ’0′, experiencing numbers through taste or gustatory synesthesia.

I didn’t want to make this particular film about ‘good looking’ plates of food, instead I really wanted to show the audience a glimpse inside Alvin’s imagination and understand what makes him approach new dishes in such a unique and original way. I wanted to challenge the viewer to think about food and how we interpret it just in the same way Alvin does when people visit his restaurant.

The biggest challenge was to shoot everything in camera, this is an approach that I always start the majority of my work with and a challenge that I really enjoy. We set out to create an abstract World that referenced the importance of creativity, innovation, science & food culture through playing with perception and by using a mixture of lenses and effects you start to recognise these micro environments within objects, like blow torching different types of meat to look like falling meteorites, to creating giant smoke rings, burning steaks to look like mountain ranges and creating mini universes in blenders.

Big thanks to Jean Michel at The Forge for the post production work and to all crew for working late.
